Running a business is, sadly, never a smooth upward trajectory. There are lots of peaks and valleys due to many different factors (some of which are out of our control) - consumer tastes change, competition increases, someone falls ill, unexpected bills need paying.
Staying positive when times are tough can be challenging. If business is slow, you're having doubts, your latest programme didn't sell or money is tight, then it may be little consolation that many business owners experience similar ups and downs.
The reality, though, is that at some time, we will all have our own mountains to climb. What makes the difference is how you respond to those circumstances.
Rather than descending into despondency and despair it helps to work out a plan that will support you in making the transition to a better place.
Having had my share of loss, failure and disappointment I've developed a few strategies to help me along the way....
Know that this will pass. The great thing about life is that things do change (although during the good times we wish they wouldn't!). When I get annoyed or irritated by people or situations I say to myself that 'this won't go on for ever'.
Focus on your wellbeing. When you have energy and vitality it's much easier to think more creatively, be more visible and take action than when you're feeling tired, upset and drained. If the latter is the case then don't feel guilty about taking extra hours or days off to nurture yourself.
Build in time during your day to switch off. As a business owner I don't find this at all easy but I've found that when I can lose myself in a book or a film for a few hours it takes the pressure off.
Circulate rather than stagnate. When things aren't going well it's tempting to withdraw (who wants to hear how successful and busy others are when you're not?!). However, I find that the energy, motivation and inspiration I get from others can rub off and spur me on. Being excited about the success of others can show you what's possible for yourself. Look out for my next Meet and Mingle networking event in early 2015 when you can get support and encouragement from like-minded business owners.
Give to others. If you find yourself in a scarcity mentality where there is 'not enough' then try the opposite of what you're thinking.... by giving. Give your time, skills, advice, support and you'll feel more abundance in your life. It will help you start the process of re-engaging with life and business and getting you back into the flow.
Change your routine. To shake up your habitual patterns of thinking try something new. Whether this is a walk to work, different food, a magazine to read or an inspirational audio to listen to. I've found that getting out of my routine will spark ideas and possibilities
Get help! Throughout my corporate life I was incredibly independent and wanted to do everything myself. I felt a failure asking for support and advice. How wrong I was! I discovered that it was a very long, hard and lonely path when you try to do it all yourself. Thankfully over the years I've learned my lesson and now seek help with knotty issues whether this is through wellness practitioners, mentors, coaches and specialists. It saves so much energy and money to get expert advice when you need it rather than battling on alone.
Depending on your situation it can take a while to get back to feeling positive about business and life - be kind to yourself and take your time.
