Hello Theo
This past week I wrapped up another series of webinars I’ve been doing on the topic of “Off Page SEO.” This is the stuff that we do ‘off’ our pages to help generate higher rankings in search results.
One of the MANY factors involved in determining search rankings is something called Backlinking; and despite all the trouble this has caused webmasters over recent years (because of bad backlinking practices) people still seem to misunderstand it’s purpose in SEO.
Let me clear up some of the myths -
Here are the things that you need to know.
- Backlink building is the process of building links on other people’s website that link back to yours.
- Backlinking, while still very important, is also the most dangerous thing you can do. This, more than anything else, is likely to get you a manual penalty from Google and get you “slapped” out of the Google index.
Therefore backlink building must be done correctly.
Here’s the safest way to do it... YOU, DON’T DO IT!
You let you customers do it by sharing the awesome content that you produce!
These days, that should be obvious.
So then, what are we supposed to do? Ignore backlinking? No. Recent studies have shown that on average, top 10 ranking sites have around 1,300 links from other websites back to their own. I wonder, how do YOU compare to that?
There are TWO ways to get backlinks: (1) Either go out yourself and build links on blogs and other places or pay someone to do it. Danger level, High. (2) Product awesome quality content and get it shared and linked to by others. Danger level, Negligible.
Which in a nutshell means – you MUST make the writing of new content A MUST DO in your marketing calendar. No exceptions.
Here’s a video on YouTube explaining a really easy to way manage your content marketing schedule -
