Why Instagram? (plus some tips and resources)

Hi Theo,

As you know there are so many ways to market our businesses it can lead to frustration and overwhelm if you try to do everything.

What I've learned, particularly with social media, is to get established on one platform, to focus on where your audience hangs out and develop your community.

Plus, choose a context which feels right for you and where you can add value (even if this means not using social media).

The one platform I'm loving at the moment is Instagram which is where I'm putting my attention currently.

Are you on there? I would love to connect with you.  I'm posting information, recommendations, resources, events and behind the scenes.

The link to my profile is here

Here's why....

~ Instagram has high engagement rates (higher than Facebook) and on the whole has positive interactions.

~ It allows you to easily visually represent you and your business through photos and videos as well as captions and hashtags. People can get a sense of your personality and your wider interests which helps build your brand.

~ You can quickly respond to interactions and post comments and build community. Through Instagram I've made friends and created connections and have had in person meetings.  This week we're having an instagram connections lunch in London.

~ I receive inspiration from other's profiles and it sparks my creativity. Particularly useful if I run out of ideas!

~ I love images and photography so for me the platform is something I enjoy (although it can be distracting scrolling through all the pictures!)

However, I know there are downsides such as finding a good photo to post, not being able to target your audience, it doesn't support clickable links in posts and not everyone is on Instagram.

And a few tips and resources....

* Be clear on your brand and what others can expect from your feed - e.g. inspiration, education, community, how to use your products, resources.

*Know you audience and what would be of interest to them

* Craft a clear bio and add a call to action

* linktree allows you to share more than one link in your profile bio

Planoly is a good tool to use to schedule posts in advance and visually see how they will look on your grid

* Use good photos and storytelling to support you and your brand.

* Don't be afraid to experiment as you can go back and delete photos that don't quite work.

* Do some research on hashtags that help to make your posts more visible.

* Encourage engagement with questions and giveaways.

* Like, comment and support other people's posts.

* Use two factor authentication security settings to keep your account safe.

* It's easy to let time run away with you on Instagram (especially when you start scrolling!) so it's best to be intentional about how you use it and how much time you spend there!

If you're there or planning to join let's meet! I would love to see your photos.
