Good Morning Theo,

I found myself in an interesting position today questioning whether or not I believed the story a potential supplier gave me as to why I hadn’t received his quote (which I requested) 3 weeks earlier. What the story was doesn’t matter, but what DOES matter is that he said he sent it to me... and was WAITING for me to get back to him!

Seriously??

If I didn’t know the guy and had personally met him I would have jumped ship faster than a dry sailor pulling into harbour and gone and ordered my product somewhere else.

* He sent me his quote 3 WEEKS AGO, and never wondered why I hadn’t got back to him!

The answer to that was simple – I didn’t get it. So whether he sent it and it went AWOL or whether he didn’t send it,I don’t know, but... seriously...?

I read recently that nearly half of all salespeople never follow up on a prospect, 1 out of every 4 make at least one follow up contact and less than 1 out of 9 make a third follow up contact / call... yet over 80% of all business done by ‘customers’ happens between the 5th and 12 contact / follow up.

Which basically means if you’re not following up potential leads more than once, you’re missing out on nearly 90% of your potential revenue!

Here’s something important to remember – blind dumb luck doesn’t build a business. A business is built through careful planning, careful consideration, and constant follow up.

You’ve got to follow up more than once!

It doesn’t matter if it’s a phone call, an email, or a handshake. Follow up, follow up, follow up!

If your site takes orders online then you need to have some kind of auto-responder in place; one that follows up both those who order and those that don’t!

If your website’s goal is to generate a lead (an email of a phone call) then you need to have some kind of CRM (customer relationship management) program. I use Salesforce. It keeps track of all my leads, my notes on them and their contact details – plus it gives me reminders of when to follow them up.

It’s not unusual for me to have as many as a dozen or so ‘contacts’ with a potential customer before they convert to a new Website job, an Analytics Consultation or SEO Marketing Plan.

But it doesn’t matter what system you use – just USE ONE.

Remember, THEY contact YOU. They WANT what YOU have to offer (if they didn’t,they wouldn’t have asked).

If you know that your products/services are worth more but are worried that your existing clients can't or won't pay a higher price.  Or you are wasting time and resources trying to convince your target audience to 'sign up', when in reality they just don't have the money to invest (even though they love what you do).  Then, there may be scope to refocus and elevate all or some of what you offer to higher paying clients.

 

It doesn't necessarily take a lot more work to attract high end clients but it does require a shift in a few areas to make it happen....

 

Design an exclusive product or signature service to offer in addition to your existing range.  Some clients are willing to pay more for extra value, speed of delivery, personal time and attention, as it means faster results, higher quality and individual service.  This could range from one off VIP/ consulting days to longer term contracts, services and programmes

 

Work on your wealth consciousness.  When you have a handle on your OWN relationship with money you'll have much more confidence in dealing with the expectations of your clients.  You'll also be comfortable charging what you're worth and not undervaluing your services.

 

Attend new higher level networking events, conferences and social activities that attract your ideal client.  Some of these events may charge more but are worth the investment for the connections you'll make.  The quality of your network of contacts and referrals is essential for attracting high end clients.

 

Dress the part.  There is a saying that you should dress for the job you want not the job you have.  This could be a good reason (or excuse) to invest in an outfit or two and upgrade your accessories! 

 

Be seen and known as the expert and leader in your field.  Speaking in public, hosting your own events, publishing books/articles or getting media coverage will help to raise your credibility and profile. 

 

Upgrade your image and brand.  Everything you do and say in your business needs to reflect a certain quality and style.  Take an objective look at all your marketing materials, your photos and social media sites - what needs to be changed, up-dated or amped up?

 

Working with high end clients can be fun and productive. Your income will improve and by working together at this level you'll feel that you are having a greater impact and adding more value.

This week I’m flat out busy and going to steal my content from a good friend, Chris Bloor from http://www.doodlevideopro.com. Chris is an Aussie ex-pat now living in the UK. But aside from that he’s a really smart guy – and yes, I have his permission to reprint.

7 Things I Know Successful People Do That Others Don't

1. They Learn From the Best. Go and find the best people in your niche and learn from them. In my own life as a copywriter, I have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in seminars, bootcamp, books, courses and coaching. The result has been helping generate hundreds of millions of dollars in combined sales.

2. They Continually Feed Their Minds: If you ask them, they will tell you in a heartbeat the latest book they are reading, videos they are watching or course they are going through.

3. They Move on a Sixpence: In business, things can change in a nanosecond. Successful people don't hang on to yesterdays technology, software or ideas. They don't resent change, they embrace it as a necessary part of the circle of life.

4. They Ask the Right Questions: Google Noah St John's Afformations and you will see what I mean.

5. They Are Self Disciplined: They know that to be successful you have to reach deeper, go further and do what others are unwilling to do. They seek to master themselves.

6. They Have a Purpose Driven Life: There is more to their life than just the pursuit of money. They want to impact the world and leave a lasting legacy.

7. They Are Humble: One of my clients Brett Heady, was the captain of the West Coast Eagles Football Team in Western Australia. No matter where you went with Brett, people would interrupt to ask for his autograph or to ask if he would pose for a photo.

I remember one day we were meeting for lunch and he told me: "I am crazy busy today - we really have to eat fast and get back to the office APAP"

And then it happened.

He was recognized and about 8 people in a row.

Each wanted to speak, shake his hand, grab an autograph, some wanted a pic taken and one old guy wanted to tell Brett a story from his youth.

And yet, despite being super-busy, Brett was ULTRA polite and patient with every single person.

When we finally rose to leave I asked how he could be so patient and he replied: "The fans are what makes the game so special. I owe it to them!"

Success really does leave clues!

Alongside the usual activities of service/product development, marketing and sales which, of course, are essential, the other secret to successfully growing your business is to 'grow yourself'.

 

This is more than having the knowledge and skills to serve and share with your clients; it's about developing yourself personally.  I'm sure you know this, but it's particularly important if you are a solo entrepreneur - because you are your business.

 

Whenever I've hired or worked with coaches and mentors who focus on both the inner and outer aspects of business I've taken BIG leaps forward.

 

However, with busy schedules and the desire to do and produce more, time out for personal reflection and development can sometimes seem a bit of luxury....yet, from my own experience I know that the biggest obstacle to attracting more clients and earning more money is usually ME.

 

Whenever you're feeling stuck or frustrated that things are not going as well as you would like, despite all your hard work, it may be time to take a break from the day to day and work out exactly what might be getting in the way. 

 

Here are some areas that when addressed can really make a difference

 

Lack of confidence can stop most of us in our tracks.  When you are confident about who you are and what you provide then you'll make the offer, charge what you're worth and take more risks.  You'll know, that even if things don't always work out, you'll find another way or try another approach

 

Resilience.  No-one that I have met wants to be rejected but when you're personal resilience is low then it's tempting to do whatever you can to minimise or avoid rejection and failure.  Unfortunately this can mean staying small in your business and your life. 

 

Limiting beliefs.  We all have beliefs about ourselves and the world around us.  Some of these can help propel you forward but there are others that can create real barriers to success.  Beliefs such as 'I'm not good enough', 'People can't afford my services', for example, get in the way of taking inspired action.  Positive beliefs and thoughts about your ability to attract clients and generate revenue are more enabling and expansive, both for you and your clients.

 

Scarcity consciousness.  It's not surprising that at some time in your business you'll have feelings of lack and scarcity around money.  The challenge is not to allow those feelings to scale back your activities through fear and insecurity.  This is the time to keep working on revenue generating ideas and to manage your mindset around your ability to increase your income.

 

Low self-esteem can be crippling for you and your business.  It can show up as procrastination, being invisible, doing lots of work for free and under earning.  If you sense that your lack of self-worth is holding you back from success in your business then do get supportive help as it will make a huge difference to your ability to enjoy an abundant and prosperous life. 

 

Business is about striking the balance between taking action and self-reflection.  When you allow yourself the time for self exploration and personal development you'll overcome many issues that you might face.
